Andhra Pickles for Telugu Weddings: Saare, Return Gifts and Jars for the New Home

In a Telugu wedding, food is never only food. It is how one family welcomes another. Long before the muhurtham, the kitchens start working: ariselu, sunnundalu, chekkalu and murukulu pile up in steel dabbas, and somewhere on the list there is always a line that says pachallu, pickles. Karthikam and Margasira bring the busiest wedding months of the year, and with them come the same questions every time. What do we send with the bride? What do we give the relatives who travelled from far? What do we pack for the couple's new home in another city?

At Pickle Basket, we think a good jar of Andhra pickle answers all three. This guide explains which of our pickles suit wedding gifting and return gifts, what they cost today, how much time to keep in hand before the wedding date, and how ordering and Cash on Delivery work.

Why Pickles Belong in Telugu Wedding Gifting

Sweets get eaten in a week. A jar of avakaya or kodi pachadi stays on the dining table for months, and every time someone opens it, they remember who sent it. That is why so many Andhra families quietly add a pickle jar to the saare they send with the bride, and why aunts and ammammas still ask, "Did you pack pachadi for the children?"

There is also a practical reason. Newly married couples often move straight to Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune or further away, into a kitchen that has nothing in it yet. A few jars of familiar pickle mean that on the first tired evening, hot rice and a spoon of pachadi is already a meal.

Made the Way You Would Make It at Home

Our recipes come from the home kitchen of our founder, Vidya Rekha Kondreddi, a homemaker from Unguturu village. Every jar is prepared in Tadepalligudem, in the Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh, in small batches and only after you place your order. We use groundnut oil and kitchen ingredients you would recognise; the full ingredient list for each pickle is printed on its product page. When you give our pickle as a wedding gift, you are giving the same kind of jar that a careful amma would have made at home, without the weeks of work it takes during a wedding month.

Our Picks for Wedding Gifts and Saare

All prices below are the current prices on our site. Prices can change with the season, so please check the product page before you order.

For the bride's saare: Avakaya and Magaya

No Andhra saare feels complete without mango pickle. Avakaya Pickle is raw mango with mustard, red chilli, fenugreek, garlic and ginger in groundnut oil: hot, sharp and unmistakably Andhra. Magaya Pickle uses peeled raw mango pieces with red chilli, mustard, fenugreek, a little jaggery and tamarind, so it is tangier and gentler. Sending one of each is a lovely gesture, because some homes are Avakaya homes and some are Magaya homes, and the new family will enjoy finding out which. If you are unsure of the difference, our guide on Avakaya vs Magaya explains it.

  • Avakaya and Magaya: 250 g ₹219, 500 g ₹429, 1 kg ₹799

For the groom's side who love non-veg: Gongura Chicken and Chicken Pickle

Many Godavari families treat a jar of non-veg pickle as the special gift, the one kept for important people. Gongura Chicken Pickle combines sour gongura leaves with spicy chicken and is our most popular gongura variety. Chicken Pickle is the classic kodi pachadi, and Chicken Boneless is easy to eat for elders and children.

  • Gongura Chicken: 250 g ₹549, 500 g ₹899, 1 kg ₹1,599
  • Chicken Pickle: 250 g ₹449, 500 g ₹749, 1 kg ₹1,299
  • Chicken Boneless: 250 g ₹499, 500 g ₹849, 1 kg ₹1,499

For a grand gesture: Mutton, Prawn and Gongura Prawns

If you want the gift to feel truly special, the coastal non-veg pickles do it. Mutton Pickle and Gongura Mutton Pickle are rich and festive. Prawn Pickle and Gongura Prawns carry the taste of the Godavari coast.

  • Mutton Pickle: 250 g ₹599, 500 g ₹1,099, 1 kg ₹2,099
  • Gongura Mutton: 250 g ₹699, 500 g ₹1,199, 1 kg ₹2,199
  • Prawn Pickle: 250 g ₹449, 500 g ₹899, 1 kg ₹1,700
  • Gongura Prawns: 250 g ₹549, 500 g ₹949, 1 kg ₹1,800

For vegetarian families and elders: Tomato, Lemon, Usiri and Ginger

Some families are fully vegetarian, and many elders avoid non-veg during the wedding days. For them, Tomato Pickle is the gentle everyday jar, Lemon Pickle is the spicy Andhra nimmakaya pachadi, Usiri Pickle is the tangy amla pachadi that many homes keep year round, and Ginger Pickle is the sweet, sour and spicy allam pachadi made for pesarattu and idli.

  • Each of these: 250 g ₹219, 500 g ₹429, 1 kg ₹799

Three Simple Ways to Put Together a Wedding Gift

You do not need a fancy hamper. Here are three easy ideas that work well, using only jars from our regular range.

1. The new home starter set. One Avakaya, one Tomato and one Chicken Pickle (or Lemon instead of Chicken for vegetarian homes), all in 500 g. It covers rice, breakfast and the late-night meal. At today's prices, Avakaya, Tomato and Chicken in 500 g add up to ₹1,607 before shipping.
2. The saare pair. Avakaya and Magaya in 1 kg each, for the bride to carry to her new home. That is ₹1,598 at today's prices.
3. Return gifts for close relatives. A single 250 g jar per family is a small, useful thank-you that does not go to waste. Veg pickles start at ₹219 for 250 g, and non-veg at ₹449.

If you are not sure how spicy to go for elders or children, our mild-to-hot spice guide will help you choose.

Plan Ahead: Timing Before the Wedding

Wedding weeks are chaotic, so order early. Because every jar is made after you order, please keep these timings in mind:

  • Orders are usually dispatched within 1 to 2 business days.
  • Standard delivery then usually takes a further 3 to 6 business days, depending on your pincode.

So we suggest ordering at least two weeks before you need the jars in hand, especially if they are going to a different city from the wedding venue. We ship within India only. If you are planning a larger order for many families, please message us on WhatsApp at +91 98486 58989 before ordering, so we can talk through timing with you.

Cash on Delivery and Payment

You can pay fully online, or choose Cash on Delivery for serviceable pincodes. For COD, a ₹99 advance is paid online to confirm the order, the delivery partner charges a ₹50 COD fee, and the balance is paid when the parcel arrives. Paying fully online avoids the COD fee. Our step-by-step guide to how COD works at Pickle Basket explains it in detail.

Keeping the Gift Fresh

Tell the person receiving the jar to always use a dry spoon, keep the lid tightly closed and make sure the pickle stays under its layer of oil. Those three small habits keep homemade pickle tasting right till the last spoon. Our guide on how to store homemade pickles has more simple tips you can share with the new couple.

A Small Jar, a Long Memory

Wedding gifts are often forgotten as soon as the photos are done. A jar of real Andhra pickle is different. It goes into the new kitchen, it comes out on the first Sunday lunch, and it keeps reminding the couple of home.

You can browse all our vegetarian pickles and non-veg pickles, or order directly on picklebasket.in. For festival gifting ideas beyond weddings, see our guide to Andhra pickles as festive gifts.

Wishing every family a happy, peaceful wedding season.
