Andhra Pickles Online in Pune: Homemade Godavari Pachadi for Your Pune Kitchen
Pune has become a second home for a lot of Telugu people. Engineers in Hinjewadi and Kharadi, students at the universities and colleges around the city, young couples in Wakad and Baner flats, and parents who moved to be near their children. Pune welcomes everyone, and its own food is wonderful.
But one thing many Telugu families in Pune tell us is that they cannot find a pickle that tastes like home. Maharashtra has its own beautiful pickle tradition, with loncha and thecha, but Andhra avakaya and gongura are a different world. If that is the taste you are missing, this guide is for you.
Maharashtrian Loncha vs Andhra Pachadi
Pune's pickles and Andhra's pickles share the same idea of preserving seasonal produce, but they are made differently.
- Andhra pickles lean on ground mustard and fenugreek for a sharp, slightly bitter bite. Avakaya is named after aavalu, mustard.
- The heat is bold. Andhra red chilli powder goes in generously and you will feel it.
- Garlic is common. Many Andhra pickles, including our avakaya, chicken and gongura pickles, use garlic.
- Gongura is uniquely Andhra. The sour red sorrel leaf is very hard to find in Pune markets, and it is the taste many Telugu people miss most.
If you love Maharashtrian thecha, you will probably enjoy our Pandu Mirchi pickle. If you love a sweet chunda, you may prefer our Magaya, which has a little jaggery.
What to Order First in Pune
Avakaya: the first jar for every Telugu home
Avakaya Pickle is where most people start. Raw mango pieces with mustard, red chilli, fenugreek, garlic, ginger and groundnut oil. Mix it with hot rice and ghee on a rainy Pune evening and you will forget you are far from home.
Gongura: the taste you cannot buy locally
Gongura leaves are rarely found in Pune vegetable markets, so a good gongura pickle is precious. Our vegetarian Gongura Pickle is made in batches; if it shows out of stock, message us on WhatsApp to hear when the next batch is ready. Meanwhile, Gongura Chicken, Gongura Mutton and Gongura Prawns carry the same sour gongura flavour with non-veg.
Ginger Pickle: for poha and upma mornings
Pune breakfasts are often poha or upma. Ginger Pickle (allam pachadi) is sweet, sour and spicy, made with ginger, tamarind and jaggery. A small spoon beside upma is a lovely Andhra touch.
Chicken Pickle: for the non-veg lover in the house
Chicken Pickle is our family favourite, cooked the Andhra way with red chilli, ginger-garlic and curry leaves. If you prefer no bones, choose Boneless Chicken, which is easier for office lunch boxes.
Andhra Pickles with Pune Food
You do not have to cook a full Telugu meal to enjoy Andhra pickles. They fit easily into a Pune kitchen.
- Varan bhaat with avakaya: Simple dal and rice with a piece of avakaya is very close to the Telugu pappu annam.
- Chapati or bhakri with tomato or ginger pickle: A thin layer inside a rolled chapati makes a quick lunch.
- Masale bhaat with lemon pickle: The tang of Lemon Pickle lifts a spiced rice dish.
- Curd rice after a heavy weekend lunch: Add a spoon of Magaya or Lemon Pickle.
- Misal pav fans: Try a tiny bit of Pandu Mirchi on the side, if you dare.
Storing Pickles Through Pune's Seasons
Pune has a pleasant climate for most of the year, but the monsoon brings long months of humidity, and the summer afternoons can be hot.
- Monsoon (roughly June to September): Humidity is the biggest risk. Always use a dry spoon, keep the lid tightly closed, and never leave the jar open near a steaming stove.
- Summer: Keep the jar in a cool cupboard away from windows and direct sun.
- Winter: The oil may thicken slightly in cool weather. This is normal.
- After opening: Our product pages recommend refrigerating for the best freshness, especially for chicken, mutton and prawn pickles.
Our guide on how to store homemade pickles explains each habit in detail.
