Andhra Pickles Online in Kolkata: Homemade Godavari Pachadi for Bengal's Telugu Families and Spice Lovers
Kolkata and the Telugu people go back a long way. Telugu families have lived in Bengal for generations, especially around the railway town of Kharagpur, and many more have come to Kolkata, Howrah and Salt Lake for work, studies and business. Many of these families still celebrate Sankranti and Ugadi the Telugu way.
Bengal also has a deep love for pickles, or achar, from mango aam kasundi to sweet tetul (tamarind) chutney. But the Andhra pickle, with its fierce red chilli and mustard, is something else entirely. This guide is for Telugu families missing home and for every Bengali food lover who's curious.
Bengali Achar Meets Andhra Pachadi
Bengal and Andhra both love mustard, but they use it differently.
- Bengal uses mustard oil and the famous kasundi, a pungent fermented mustard sauce. Bengali pickles often lean sweet-sour, with jaggery or sugar.
- Andhra uses ground mustard seeds as a core part of the masala, especially in avakaya, with groundnut oil. Andhra pickles lean hot and sharp, rarely sweet.
If you love kasundi's punch, you'll probably love avakaya, which gets its name from aavalu, mustard.
What to Order First in Kolkata
For Telugu families: Avakaya and Gongura
Avakaya Pickle is the first jar for every Telugu home. Gongura Pickle is the sour sorrel-leaf pickle that's nearly impossible to find fresh in Kolkata. Gongura is made in small batches; if it shows out of stock, message us on WhatsApp for the next batch, or try Gongura Chicken.
For Bengali seafood lovers: Prawn Pickle
Bengal loves chingri. Our Prawn Pickle is a Godavari-style royyala pachadi with prawns, red chilli, garlic, ginger, curry leaves and a touch of tamarind. Try it with plain rice for a Godavari-meets-Ganga moment. Gongura Prawns adds sourness for the adventurous.
For mutton lovers: Mutton Pickle
Kolkata's love for mutton is legendary. Our Mutton Pickle is slow-cooked mutton in a deep masala with cloves, cardamom and cinnamon, ready to eat.
For sweet-sour lovers: Magaya and Ginger
If you enjoy Bengali sweet chutneys, try Magaya, a mango pickle with a little jaggery and tamarind, or Ginger Pickle, which is sweet, sour and spicy.
Andhra Pickles With Bengali Food
- Bhaat-dal with avakaya: Simple dal and rice with a little avakaya is very close to the Telugu pappu annam.
- Khichuri on a rainy day with lemon pickle: Our spicy Lemon Pickle lifts a monsoon khichuri.
- Luchi with tomato pickle: An unusual but delicious pairing.
- Panta bhaat with pandu mirchi: For the brave, a tiny bit of fiery pickle with cool fermented rice.

Sending a Taste of Home to Kharagpur and Beyond
Many Telugu families around Kharagpur and Kolkata have parents or grandparents who grew up with homemade pickles but no longer make them. A jar delivered to their door is a lovely surprise. If it is a gift, pay online in full so they don't have to pay anything on delivery, and add a quick WhatsApp message so they know a parcel is coming.
Storing Pickles in Kolkata's Humidity
Kolkata is humid for much of the year and the monsoon is long. Pickles need a little extra care:
- Always use a dry spoon. In humid air, moisture is the enemy.
- Close the lid tightly after every use; don't leave jars open during meals.
- Keep pickles under the oil. Press pieces down after use.
- Store in a cool, dark cupboard away from the stove and windows.
- Refrigerate after opening for best freshness, as our product pages advise, and always for non-veg pickles.
