How Much Pickle Does a Family Need in a Month? A Simple Guide to Pack Sizes and Planning

"Should I order 250 g or 1 kg?" It's one of the most common questions we get. Order too little, and you run out in the middle of the month. Order too much, and a jar sits open for too long.

There's no single right answer, because every household eats differently. But with a little planning, you can find the right size for your family. Here's a simple way to think about it.

Step 1: Count How Often Pickle Is Eaten at Home

Start with a quick, honest look at your household:

  • How many people eat pickle?
  • How many meals a day include pickle? Some families have it at lunch and dinner; others only with curd rice.
  • How much per serving? As a home guide, a typical adult serving is about a teaspoon of masala or one or two pieces. Non-veg pickles: a piece or two per plate of rice.

Multiply roughly, and you'll quickly see whether your family is a "light", "regular" or "heavy" pickle household.

Step 2: Match Your Household to a Pack Size

All our pickles come in 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg packs. Check each product page for current prices.

250 g: for variety and small households

Best for:

  • People living alone, students and couples
  • Trying a pickle for the first time
  • Pickles you love but eat only occasionally, like Pandu Mirchi or Munakkaya
  • Non-veg pickles in small households, so you finish the jar while it's at its best

500 g: the everyday family size

Best for:

  • Families of three or four who eat their favourite pickle most days
  • The "main" pickle of the household, often Avakaya, Tomato or Lemon

1 kg: for big families and true favourites

Best for:

  • Joint families and large households
  • The one pickle everyone at home agrees on
  • Families who share jars with relatives or neighbours

Step 3: Think in "Roles", Not Just Jars

Most homes don't need ten pickles. They need a few pickles that each play a role:

Buy the daily pickle in a bigger size and the others in smaller sizes.

  • 500 g Chicken or Mutton, if non-veg

Festivals, Guests and Busy Months

Pickle consumption isn't the same every month. Plan for the months when it goes up:

  • Festival seasons like Sankranti, Ugadi and Dasara, when relatives visit and meals get bigger
  • Summer, when curd rice becomes a daily lunch and lemon and magaya disappear quickly
  • Exam season or busy work weeks, when quick pickle-rice dinners save time
  • Weddings and family functions, when the house is full for days

In these months, order a size up for your daily pickle, or add an extra jar.

Tips to Avoid Waste

  • Use a small serving jar. Fill a small container for daily use and keep the big jar sealed.
  • Finish one jar before opening the next of the same pickle.
  • Buy non-veg pickles in smaller sizes unless your family eats them often; they need refrigeration after opening.
  • Store well. Dry spoon, lid tight, pieces under the oil, refrigerate after opening. See our storage guide.
  • Follow the shelf-life details on your jar label for your batch.

When to Reorder

Since every jar is made fresh after you order, plan ahead so you don't run out. As per our shipping policy, jars are handed to the courier within 1 to 2 business days of order confirmation, and standard delivery typically takes 3 to 6 business days after dispatch. A good habit is to reorder when your daily jar is about one-third full.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which size should I buy for my first order?

250 g jars let you try more varieties. Once you know your favourites, move up to 500 g or 1 kg.

Is 1 kg too much for a small family?

For most small families, 1 kg is a lot for one pickle. 500 g of the favourite plus smaller jars of others usually works better.

Should I buy non-veg pickles in big sizes?

Only if your family eats them often. Non-veg pickles need refrigeration after opening, so smaller sizes are safer for most homes.

How do I know when to reorder?

Reorder when your daily jar is about one-third full, so the new jar arrives before you run out.
