Gongura Chicken Pickle Online: How Andhra Gongura Kodi Pachadi Tastes, Prices and How to Choose

Ask anyone from the Godavari districts what they miss most about home food, and sooner or later the word gongura comes up. Those sour red-stemmed leaves turn up in pappu, in pachadi and, on special days, cooked with chicken. Gongura kodi is the dish that makes people ask for a second helping of rice without saying a word.

At Pickle Basket, we make that same taste as a pickle: Gongura Chicken Pickle, or gongura kodi pachadi. If you have been searching for gongura chicken pickle online and wondering whether it is worth ordering, this guide explains how it tastes, what goes into the jar, the current prices for each pack size, and how it compares with our regular chicken pickle.

What Is Gongura Chicken Pickle?

Gongura is red sorrel, a leafy green that Telugu homes love for its natural sourness. On its own, it becomes the famous gongura pachadi. Cooked with chicken, it becomes something richer: the tang of the leaves soaks into the masala, and the chicken pieces carry that sour-spicy coating all the way through.

Our Gongura Chicken Pickle is made the way our founder, Vidya Rekha Kondreddi, makes it at home. She is a homemaker from Unguturu village, and every jar is prepared in our kitchen in Tadepalligudem, in the Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh.

How we make it

The chicken is cooked and slow-fried until it is dry. Separately, fresh gongura leaves are cooked down with red chilli powder, garlic, ginger, coriander seeds, fenugreek, cumin and lemon juice. Then the two are mixed together and covered with groundnut oil. We make it in small batches, and your jar is prepared fresh after you place your order, not pulled from old stock.

What is in the jar

The full ingredient list, as shown on the product page: fresh chicken, fresh gongura leaves (sorrel leaves), red chilli powder, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, garlic, ginger, salt, turmeric powder, coriander seeds, groundnut oil, curry leaves, cumin and lemon juice.

That is all. It is a short list of kitchen ingredients, the same ones you would find in an Andhra home.

How Does It Taste?

The first thing you notice is the tang. Gongura has a clean, slightly earthy sourness, and it hits before the chilli does. Then the heat of the Andhra red chilli comes through, along with garlic and ginger. The chicken pieces are juicy and well coated in the gongura masala.

On our product page we describe it simply: tangy first, then spicy. It is our most popular gongura variety and a favourite with people who love sour-spicy food.

If you have never tasted gongura before, our guide to Gongura Pickle, Andhra's sour sorrel leaf pachadi explains the leaf itself and why Telugu families are so attached to it.

Gongura Chicken Pickle Price

Here are the current prices on our site. Prices can change with the season, so please check the product page before you order.

  • 250 g: ₹549 | 500 g: ₹899 | 1 kg: ₹1,599

A 250 g jar is a good way to try it for the first time. If gongura chicken is already a favourite in your house, the 500 g and 1 kg packs bring the price per gram down: 500 g works out to about ₹180 per 100 g, and 1 kg to about ₹160 per 100 g, compared with about ₹220 per 100 g for the 250 g jar.

Gongura Chicken or Regular Chicken Pickle?

This is the question we hear most from people ordering non-veg pickles for the first time. Both are made with fresh chicken in groundnut oil, but they taste quite different.

  • Main flavour: Gongura Chicken is sour from the gongura first, then spicy. Chicken Pickle is spicy, with warm whole spices and a light lemony tang.
  • Spices: Gongura Chicken uses chilli, garlic, ginger, coriander seeds, fenugreek and cumin. Chicken Pickle adds cloves, cardamom and cinnamon to chilli, ginger-garlic, cumin and fenugreek.
  • Chicken: both use traditional chicken pieces; the regular Chicken Pickle is bone-in.
  • 250 g price: Gongura Chicken ₹549, Chicken Pickle ₹449.

Choose our Chicken Pickle if you want the classic Andhra kodi pachadi, warm with cloves, cardamom and cinnamon. Our product page suggests it as the best place to start if you are trying non-veg pickle for the first time.

Choose Gongura Chicken Pickle if you love sour food, if gongura pappu is your comfort dish, or if you want something you will not find in most shops.

Want no bones at all? Our Boneless Chicken Pickle is the choice, though it is made without gongura. We compared those two in detail in Chicken Pickle vs Boneless Chicken Pickle. You can also see all our chicken jars together on the chicken pickle page.

How to Eat Gongura Chicken Pickle

You do not need a recipe. A little goes a long way.

  • Hot rice with ghee. This is the Telugu way. Take a piece of chicken with some masala, mix it into hot rice with a spoon of ghee, and eat it slowly.
  • With chapati or pulka. Roll a piece of chicken and some masala inside a warm pulka for a quick lunch.
  • With curd rice. When you want the tang without too much heat, a little gongura chicken on the side of curd rice is very satisfying.
  • On busy days. When there is no time to cook a curry, a bowl of rice and a jar of gongura chicken make a complete meal.

Other Gongura Jars You May Like

Gongura works with more than chicken. If your family likes the sour taste, you can try:

Storing Your Jar

Non-veg pickles need a little care.

  • Always use a clean, completely dry spoon.
  • Keep the chicken pieces under the oil layer.
  • Close the lid tightly and keep the jar in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight.
  • Refrigerate after opening for the best freshness.

The product page lists a shelf life of up to 12 months, and the jar label carries the shelf-life details for your batch. For more tips, read our guide on how to store homemade pickles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the gongura chicken pickle bone-in?

It is made with chicken pieces in the traditional style. If you want only boneless pieces, choose our Boneless Chicken Pickle (it is made without gongura).

Is it very spicy?

It is tangy first and then spicy. The gongura sourness balances the chilli, so many people find it easier to enjoy than they expect. If you prefer less heat, eat it with curd rice.

Is Cash on Delivery available?

Yes, for serviceable pincodes. You pay a ₹99 advance online to confirm the order, and there is a ₹50 COD charge. You pay the balance at your door. Pay fully online by UPI to skip the ₹50 charge.

Is Pickle Basket the same as Pickles Basket?

No. Pickle Basket is our own brand, made in Tadepalligudem. We are not connected with any similarly named seller. Read our clarification.
