Chicken Pickle vs Boneless Chicken Pickle: Which Andhra Kodi Pachadi Should You Order?
A question we are often asked on WhatsApp is a simple one: "Amma, which chicken pickle should I take, the normal one or the boneless one?"
It is a fair question. Both are Andhra kodi pachadi, both are made in our kitchen in Tadepalligudem with fresh chicken, red chilli powder, ginger, garlic and groundnut oil, and both disappear quickly once the jar is opened. But they are not the same, and the right choice depends on who is eating, how and where.
This guide explains the difference in plain words so you can pick the jar that suits your family.
What Is Andhra Chicken Pickle?
Chicken pickle, or kodi pachadi, is one of the proudest non-veg traditions of Andhra kitchens. Pieces of chicken are cooked with spices until they are well done, then mixed with a fiery masala of red chilli powder, ginger, garlic and spices, and preserved in oil. The result is spicy, rich and full of flavour, and a small spoon turns plain hot rice into a feast.
At Pickle Basket we make two versions:
- Chicken Pickle, made with bone-in pieces
- Chicken Boneless, made with boneless chicken
The Main Difference: Bone-In vs Boneless
Chicken Pickle (bone-in)
This is the traditional village-style kodi pachadi many of us grew up with. The pieces come with bones, the way chicken is usually cooked at home.
- Taste and texture: Many people feel that cooking with the bone gives a deeper, homely flavour, and they enjoy picking the masala off each piece with their fingers.
- How it is eaten: Best with hot rice, eaten by hand, slowly, the Telugu way.
- Spices: Our recipe uses fresh chicken, red chilli powder, mustard seeds, garlic, ginger, curry leaves, coriander seeds, a warm blend of cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and cumin, fenugreek, a touch of lemon juice and groundnut oil.
Chicken Boneless
This is the same love for kodi pachadi in a more convenient form. Every spoon is chicken and masala, with no bones to work around.
- Taste and texture: Meaty, spicy pieces that soak up the masala well.
- How it is eaten: Easy with rice, but also with chapati, paratha, dosa or in a quick roll.
- Spices: Fresh boneless chicken, red chilli powder, garlic, ginger, curry leaves, mustard seeds, coriander powder, turmeric, fenugreek, cloves, cardamom, cumin and groundnut oil.
For the exact ingredient list of each jar, please see its product page.
Quick Comparison
- Pieces: Chicken Pickle is bone-in; Chicken Boneless is all meat, no bones.
- Style: Chicken Pickle is the traditional village-style jar; Chicken Boneless is the convenient one where every spoon is meat.
- Best with: Chicken Pickle shines with hot rice, eaten by hand; Chicken Boneless works with rice, chapati, dosa and rolls.
- Good for: Chicken Pickle suits families who love the classic taste; Chicken Boneless suits kids, elders, tiffin boxes and travel.
- Pack sizes: Both come in 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg.
Who Should Choose Which?
Choose the bone-in Chicken Pickle if:
- You want the classic taste of home-style kodi pachadi.
- You usually eat it with hot rice at home, sitting down and taking your time.
- Elders in your house feel that "real" chicken pickle must have bones.
Choose Chicken Boneless if:
- You are packing it in a lunch box or tiffin for office or college.
- You are buying for children or elderly parents who find bones difficult.
- You want to eat it with chapati, paratha or dosa, or roll it into a quick wrap.
- You are travelling and want something easy to eat on the go.
Many families simply keep both: bone-in for weekend lunches and boneless for weekday tiffins.
Want Something Sour and Spicy? Try Gongura Chicken
If you enjoy chicken pickle, you should also taste Gongura Chicken Pickle. Fresh gongura (sorrel) leaves give it a sharp, sour taste that cuts through the spice and richness of the chicken. It is one of the most loved Andhra combinations, and it is very hard to find outside Telugu homes. Read more in our guide to Andhra non-veg pickles.
How to Enjoy Chicken Pickle
- Hot rice and ghee: A spoon of chicken pickle, a little ghee and steaming rice. Nothing more needed.
- With pappu (dal): Plain dal rice becomes special with a piece of chicken pickle on the side.
- Curd rice partner: The cool curd balances the heat beautifully.
- Chapati roll: Boneless pieces with a little onion, rolled in a warm chapati, make a quick evening snack.
- Travel food: A small box of boneless pickle with rice or chapati keeps a long train journey happy.
How to Store Chicken Pickle
Non-veg pickles need a little more care than veg pickles:
- Always use a clean, completely dry spoon.
- Keep the chicken pieces pressed under the oil.
- Close the lid tightly after every use.
- After opening, keeping non-veg pickles in the refrigerator is the safer choice, especially in hot weather. If the oil turns cloudy in the fridge, that is normal; let your portion sit at room temperature for a few minutes before eating.
- Follow the storage note and best-before period printed on your jar.

Which Pack Size Should You Order?
Both chicken pickles come in 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg packs. At the time of writing, the boneless version is priced a little higher than the bone-in one, since every gram is meat. Please check each product page for the latest price before ordering.
- First time trying: A 250 g jar of each, so the family can decide its favourite.
- Regular household: 500 g of your favourite.
- Big family or sharing: 1 kg.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is boneless chicken pickle less spicy than the bone-in one?
Both are made in the Andhra style with red chilli powder, ginger and garlic, so both are spicy. The main difference is the cut of chicken, not the heat.
Which chicken pickle is better for kids?
Most parents prefer Chicken Boneless for children because there are no bones to worry about. You can mix a little into rice or curd rice to soften the heat.
Is the chicken pickle made fresh?
Yes. Like all our pickles, both chicken pickles are prepared fresh in small batches after you place your order, and dispatched within 1–2 business days.
