Andhra Pickles Online in Chennai: Homemade Godavari Taste, Delivered to Your Door
Chennai and Andhra have always been close neighbours. Many Telugu families have lived in Chennai for generations, and many more have moved there for work, studies and treatment. Walk through T. Nagar, Mylapore, Anna Nagar or the IT corridor on OMR and you will hear Telugu at the bus stop, in the lift and at the next table.
And yet, when the last jar from home runs out, it is surprisingly hard to find a pickle that tastes like Amma's. Chennai has wonderful food of its own, and its pickle culture is rich, but Tamil-style oorugai and Andhra pachadi are different things. If you grew up on Godavari-style Avakaya or Gongura, you know exactly what we mean.
This guide is for you: the Telugu family settled in Chennai, the student in a hostel near Guindy, the young couple in a Velachery flat, and also the Chennai food lover who simply enjoys real Andhra heat. Let us talk about what to order first, how to store pickles in Chennai weather, and how delivery and Cash on Delivery work.
Andhra Pachadi vs Chennai Oorugai: What Is the Difference?
Both are made with love, but they taste different.
- Heat: Andhra pickles are known for a bold red chilli punch. Our recipes use plenty of red chilli powder, and the heat is meant to be felt.
- Mustard and fenugreek: Andhra pickles like Avakaya lean heavily on ground mustard (aavalu) and fenugreek, which gives a sharp, slightly bitter, very addictive kick.
- Oil: Andhra pickles sit under a generous layer of oil. At Pickle Basket we use groundnut oil, the way it is done in Godavari kitchens.
- Garlic: Many Andhra pickles use whole or crushed garlic, which you will find in our Avakaya, Chicken and Gongura pickles.
Neither style is better. They are simply different, and if your tongue grew up on the Andhra side, nothing else quite fills that gap.
Which Andhra Pickles to Order First in Chennai
If you are building your Andhra pickle shelf in Chennai, here is how we would start.
The must-have: Avakaya
Avakaya Pickle is the king of the Andhra kitchen. Raw mango pieces, red chilli powder, mustard, fenugreek, garlic and groundnut oil. Mix a spoon into hot rice with a little ghee and you will understand why Telugu people carry it across the country.
The gentle everyday jar: Tomato Pickle
Tomato Pickle is tangy, spicy and a little softer on the tongue. It works with idli, dosa, chapati and curd rice, so it fits easily into a Chennai breakfast table too.
The tangy all-rounder: Lemon Pickle
Lemon Pickle (nimmakaya pachadi) is familiar to almost everyone, but the Andhra version is spicier. It is a lovely partner for curd rice on a hot Chennai afternoon.
For real heat lovers: Pandu Mirchi
Pandu Mirchi Pickle is made with fresh ripe red chillies, mustard, fenugreek, garlic and curry leaves. It is fiery and deeply Andhra. A small spoon is enough.
For the non-veg table
If your family enjoys non-veg, try Chicken Pickle for an everyday favourite, or Gongura Chicken Pickle for the sour gongura taste that is very hard to find outside Telugu homes. Chennai is a coastal city that loves seafood, so our Prawn Pickle and Gongura Prawns are worth a try.
You can see everything on our veg pickles page and non-veg pickles page.
Keeping Pickles Fresh in Chennai's Heat and Humidity
Chennai is warm for most of the year and humid near the sea. Pickles are happy in these conditions only if you follow a few simple habits:
- Always use a clean, completely dry spoon. Even a drop of water can spoil a pickle in humid weather.
- Keep the pickle under its oil. After taking some out, press the rest down so the oil covers it.
- Close the lid tightly every time, especially during the monsoon months.
- Keep the jar away from the stove, the window and the sink. A cool, dry cupboard is best.
- Take out a small portion into a little bowl for daily use instead of opening the main jar again and again.
- Non-veg pickles such as chicken, prawn and mutton are safer in the refrigerator after opening, especially in hot weather.
For how long each pickle keeps, please follow the storage note on its product page and on your jar. You can also read our detailed guide on how to store homemade pickles.
Simple Ways to Enjoy Andhra Pickles in Chennai
- Curd rice with Avakaya or Lemon Pickle: The best lunch on a hot day.
- Idli and dosa with Tomato Pickle: A small spoon on the side of your sambar and chutney.
- Hot rice, ghee and Gongura Chicken: A full meal on a tired weeknight.
- Office lunch box: Mix a spoon of pickle into rice in the morning; it tastes even better by lunchtime.
- Chapati roll: Spread a little Pandu Mirchi or Tomato Pickle on a chapati and roll it up.
Which Pack Size Should You Choose?
Most of our pickles come in 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg packs.
- Living alone or in a hostel: Start with 250 g jars of two or three different pickles. You get variety and finish each jar while it tastes its best.
- Small family: 500 g of your everyday favourite (often Avakaya or Tomato) plus a 250 g non-veg jar.
- Big family or sharing with relatives: 1 kg of the family favourite works out well.
Prices change with the season, so please check the product page for the latest price of each size.
