Sending Homemade Pickles to Your Children in Another City: A Parent's Guide

Every Telugu mother has packed a bag for a child leaving home. A few sets of clothes, important documents, some snacks, and always, always a jar of pickle. Wrapped in two plastic bags, sealed with tape, tucked between towels so it doesn't break.

But children don't come home as often as we'd like. Studies, jobs, long commutes, exams. And the jar you packed six months ago is long finished. If you're a parent who wants to keep sending that taste of home, this guide is for you.

Why Pickles Mean So Much to Children Away From Home

Ask any student in a hostel or any young professional living alone what they miss most, and food comes up quickly. Not elaborate dishes, but the simple taste of home: pappu with avakaya, curd rice with lemon pickle, a piece of chicken pickle with hot rice.

A jar of pickle does three things:

  • It makes bland hostel or office food edible.
  • It saves them on tired evenings when cooking feels impossible.
  • It reminds them, quietly, that someone at home is thinking of them.

Choosing the Right Jars

Think about where your child lives and how they eat.

For hostel students

Avoid non-veg pickles unless the hostel has a fridge, because non-veg pickles need refrigeration after opening.

For working professionals living alone or with flatmates

For a newly married child setting up a home

A small "starter shelf" of four or five jars, mixing veg and non-veg, is a lovely gesture. Include the family favourites so the new home has the same taste as yours.

How Many Jars and Which Size?

For someone living alone, 250 g jars are usually best. They finish each jar while it tastes its best, and small jars fit easily in a hostel cupboard or a small kitchen. For a child sharing with flatmates who also love Andhra food, a 500 g jar of the favourite makes sense.

Two to four jars at a time is a good amount. Better to send smaller orders more often than one huge box that sits for months.

Ordering Directly to Their Address

The simplest way: order online and enter your child's address as the delivery address. We deliver within India.

Tips for a smooth delivery:

  • Use your child's phone number for delivery, so the courier can reach them.
  • Write the full address: hostel name, block and room number, or flat number, building, area, landmark and the correct pincode.
  • Tell your child it's coming. A quick WhatsApp message saves confusion at the gate.
  • Check if the hostel accepts parcels at the gate or office.

Pay Online So They Don't Pay at the Door

Cash on Delivery is available for serviceable pincodes, but if it's a gift from you, it's kinder to pay fully online. That way your child doesn't need to pay anything at the door, and paying online also skips the ₹50 COD fee charged by our delivery partner.

How Long Will It Take?

As per our shipping policy:

  • Each jar is made fresh after you order in our kitchen in Tadepalligudem and handed to the courier within 1 to 2 business days.
  • Standard delivery typically takes 3 to 6 business days from dispatch, depending on the destination. Express delivery, where available, typically takes 2 to 4 business days for metro and tier-1 destinations.
  • A tracking link is sent by WhatsApp, SMS and email once it ships. Share it with your child.

If you're timing it for a birthday or exam week, order a little early.

Add a Personal Touch

A parcel from home feels even better with a few words. Send a voice note when the tracking link arrives, or a photo of the same pickle on your own dining table. Tell them which pickle to eat with what. These small things matter more than we think.

Remind Them How to Store It

Children living alone don't always know the old rules. Share these with them:

  • Always use a dry spoon. Never a wet or used one.
  • Keep the pickle under the oil. Press it down after each use.
  • Close the lid tightly.
  • Keep it in a cool cupboard away from the stove and window.
  • Refrigerate after opening for the best freshness, and always for non-veg pickles.

You can send them our pickle storage guide too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order pickles to my son's or daughter's address in another city?

Yes. Enter their address at checkout. We deliver within India.

Should I choose COD for a gift?

It's better to pay online, so your child doesn't need to pay at the door, and you skip the ₹50 COD fee.

Which pickles are best for students?

Avakaya, Lemon and Tomato Pickle are reliable choices. Add non-veg only if they have a fridge.

Can you deliver outside India?

No. We currently deliver only within India.
