Karthika Masam Vanabhojanalu: Andhra Pickles to Pack for the Picnic Under the Trees
When the evenings turn cool and the lamps start appearing on doorsteps every evening, Telugu homes know that Karthika Masam has arrived. It is a month of early morning baths, deepams floating on water, fasting on Mondays for many families, and one of the happiest traditions of the year: the vanabhojanam, a shared meal eaten outdoors in a garden or grove.
In our village, vanabhojanalu meant a whole day out. Big vessels of pulihora and curd rice, steel boxes of pickle, children running between the trees and elders sitting on mats telling the same old stories. Today the gathering may be in a city park, a farmhouse, a temple garden or the terrace of an apartment block, but the spirit is the same.
This guide is for anyone planning one this year: what to cook, what to carry, and which Andhra pickles make the meal feel complete.
What Is Karthika Vanabhojanam?
Vana means forest or grove and bhojanam means meal. Traditionally, families and communities gather under trees during Karthika Masam, often near an usiri (amla) tree, which is considered auspicious in this month. People cook or carry food, offer prayers, and then sit together and eat.
Today, many colony associations, caste and community groups, office teams and extended families organise vanabhojanalu on a Sunday in Karthika. Some cook on site in big vessels. Others simply bring food from home and share. Either way, the menu is simple, filling and made to be eaten with your hands on a leaf or plate.
A Simple Vanabhojanam Menu That Works Outdoors
You do not need a long menu. The best outdoor meals are the ones that do not spoil quickly and taste good even at room temperature.
- Pulihora (tamarind rice): The star of most picnics. It travels well and actually tastes better a few hours after cooking.
- Curd rice (daddojanam): Pack it a little loose, because it thickens as it sits. Add a few grapes or pomegranate seeds if children are coming.
- Plain rice with pappu (dal): For those who want a proper "meal" plate.
- A dry curry: Potato fry, cabbage fry or beans curry hold up well.
- Something sweet: Payasam in a flask, or a laddu or two.
- And of course, pickles. One tangy, one fiery, and one non-veg jar if your group eats it.
Pickles are the quiet heroes here. They do not need heating, they do not need refrigeration for a day out, and a small spoon turns plain rice into something everyone wants seconds of.
Which Andhra Pickles to Pack for Vanabhojanam
For curd rice: Lemon or Magaya
Curd rice needs something sharp beside it. Lemon Pickle (nimmakaya pachadi) is the classic choice and one of the easiest pickles to carry. If your group prefers something a little softer and slightly sweet, Magaya Pickle, made with peeled mango pieces, a little jaggery and tamarind, is lovely with daddojanam.
For plain rice and ghee: Avakaya
No Telugu outdoor meal is complete without a box of Avakaya Pickle. Raw mango pieces, red chilli, mustard, fenugreek, garlic and groundnut oil. Hot rice, a spoon of ghee and avakaya is what everybody queues for first.
For the usiri tree connection: Usiri Pickle
Since the vanabhojanam is so closely tied to the amla tree, it feels right to carry a jar of Usiri Pickle. Whole amla, pickled the Andhra way with chilli, mustard, fenugreek and curry leaves. It is tangy, a little bitter, and a nice talking point with the elders.
For heat lovers: Pandu Mirchi
There is always one uncle who says nothing is spicy enough. Keep a small box of Pandu Mirchi Pickle for him. It is made from fresh ripe red chillies and it is one of our hottest pickles.
For non-veg groups: Chicken Pickle
Many families keep Karthika as a vegetarian month, so check with your group first. If non-veg is welcome, Boneless Chicken Pickle is the easiest to share outdoors because there are no bones to manage on a leaf plate.
How Much Pickle Should You Carry?
A little pickle goes a long way. As a rough home guide, a small spoon per person per variety is usually enough, since people take a bit of two or three different pickles rather than a lot of one.
- Small family outing (6 to 8 people): Two or three small steel boxes, each filled from a 250 g jar, are plenty.
- Extended family (15 to 25 people): Carry from 500 g jars, and keep the main jars at home.
- Colony or community vanabhojanam: Ask two or three families to bring one variety each, so you have variety without anyone over-buying.
Do not carry the whole jar outdoors if you can avoid it. Take out what you need into smaller boxes at home with a dry spoon, and leave the main jar safely closed in your kitchen.
Keeping Food and Pickles Fresh Outdoors
Karthika weather is kind, but a day outdoors still needs some care.
- Use dry, clean steel boxes with tight lids for pickles. Even a little water in the box can spoil the pickle by evening.
- Keep pickle boxes in the shade, away from the cooking area and the sun.
- Carry a separate dry spoon for each pickle so flavours do not mix and nobody uses a wet spoon.
- Bring leftovers home in the same box, and finish them at the next meal instead of pouring them back into the main jar.
- Non-veg pickles should be carried in small quantities and eaten the same day.

Which pickle is best for an outdoor meal?
Lemon Pickle and Avakaya travel very well and suit most people. Add Magaya for those who like it softer, and Pandu Mirchi for heat lovers.
