Andhra Pickles Online in Visakhapatnam: Homemade Godavari Pachadi for Vizag Homes
Writing about Vizag feels a little strange for me, because it is not "another city" in the way Mumbai or Kolkata is. It is our own Andhra. Many of our relatives from the Godavari side have moved there over the years, for jobs, for children's colleges, for the steel plant and the port. When they come home for a function, the talk always turns to the same thing: "Vizag has everything, but who has time to put avakaya now?"
That is the honest reason a lot of our orders go to Visakhapatnam. It is not that people there do not know pickles. They know them very well. It is that the big summer pickle-making, with the whole family cutting mangoes on the verandah, has quietly become hard to do in a flat in Madhurawada or a quarters in the steel plant township.
So this post is for Vizag homes. What we send, which jars suit the way Vizag eats, and how ordering and delivery work.
Who Orders Andhra Pickles in Vizag
Over time we have noticed four kinds of Vizag customers, and each one has a slightly different need.
- Working couples in the newer areas. Families in Madhurawada, Rushikonda and along the beach road IT corridor often both have office hours. Weekday lunch boxes need something quick, and a good pickle does a lot of work in a dabba.
- Families from other states. Visakhapatnam has the Eastern Naval Command, the steel plant, the port and many central offices, so many families come from outside Andhra on transfer. Many of them taste avakaya at a neighbour's house and then ask us where to get a "real" jar.
- Students. Andhra University, GITAM and the engineering colleges bring young people from all over the Telugu states. A small jar of pickle from a known kitchen is a comfort in hostel life.
- Old Vizag families. In Dwaraka Nagar, MVP Colony, Seethammadhara and the old town, many homes still make one or two pickles themselves, but they order the ones that are hard to get right, like gongura or non-veg.
The Godavari Touch in an Uttarandhra Kitchen
Vizag food has its own personality. Being on the coast, fish and prawns are everyday food, not a Sunday thing. From the hills towards Araku comes bamboo chicken and a love for smoky flavour. The north Andhra kitchen also leans a little more on tamarind and a sharper heat than what you see in some other parts of the state.
Our pickles come from the Godavari side, near Tadepalligudem, and the style is a little different. Godavari pickles are known for generous groundnut oil, mustard and fenugreek that you can actually taste, and a heat that builds rather than hits you in one shot. Many Vizag customers tell us they like having both: their own home style for daily rice, and a Godavari jar for variety.
Which Jars Suit the Vizag Table
Avakaya for the everyday plate
If there is only one jar in a Vizag home, it is usually avakaya. Our Avakaya Pickle is raw mango pieces with mustard, Andhra red chilli, fenugreek, garlic and ginger, settled in groundnut oil. With hot rice, a spoon of ghee and a little pappu, it is the meal everyone grew up on. If you are not sure whether to choose avakaya or the sun-dried magaya, our avakaya vs magaya post explains the difference.
Gongura for the families who came on transfer
For people from outside Andhra, gongura is often the jar that makes them fall in love with Telugu food. Our Gongura Pickle is fresh red sorrel leaves cooked with red chilli, garlic, mustard, fenugreek and spices in groundnut oil, and it is fully vegetarian. The sourness is unusual at first, and then you find yourself reaching for it with every meal. Many naval and steel plant families send a jar back to their home towns too.
Prawn pickle, even in a city of seafood
You might think a coastal city does not need prawn pickle, because fresh prawns are in the market every morning. But fresh prawn curry and prawn pickle are two different things. Our Prawn Pickle is coastal Godavari-style royyala pachadi: prawns cooked until firm, then tossed in Andhra red chilli, garlic, ginger, curry leaves and a touch of tamarind in groundnut oil. It is what you open on a rainy evening when nobody wants to go to the market, or pack for a long train journey. If you like it tangier, the Gongura Prawns combines both loves in one jar. Our prawn vs gongura prawns guide can help you choose.
Pandu mirchi for the heat lovers
North Andhra people are not scared of chilli, and for them we always suggest the Pandu Mirchi Pickle. It is ripe red chillies ground with salt, mustard, fenugreek and garlic into a bright red pachadi. A small piece with idli, dosa or plain rice is enough to wake up a sleepy Monday.
What a Vizag Order Costs
Our veg pickles are ₹219 for 250 g, ₹429 for 500 g and ₹799 for 1 kg at the time of writing. Prawn Pickle is ₹449, ₹899 and ₹1,700 for the same three sizes, and Gongura Prawns is ₹549, ₹949 and ₹1,800. Prices can change, so please check each product page before you order. You can see all jars on our vegetarian and non-veg pages.
For a first order in Vizag, a simple mix works well: one avakaya for the daily plate, one gongura to try something different, and one non-veg jar for the weekend.
How Delivery to Visakhapatnam Works
We do not keep jars ready in a godown. Every pickle is made fresh in small batches after you order. Our shipping policy says orders are handed to the courier within 1 to 2 business days of confirmation, and standard delivery usually takes 3 to 6 business days after dispatch, depending on your pincode. You get a tracking link on WhatsApp, SMS and email once it is shipped.
Please give your full address with flat number, area and a landmark. Vizag has many look-alike colony names across Gajuwaka, Pendurthi and the city side, and a good landmark saves the delivery person a lot of calls.
When the jar reaches you, use a dry spoon, keep the pieces under the oil and close the lid tightly. Our guide on how to store homemade pickles has more tips, which matter in Vizag's humid sea air. The jar label carries the shelf-life details for your batch.
Cash on Delivery and WhatsApp Ordering
You can order on picklebasket.in, or message us on WhatsApp at +91 9848658989. Tell us which part of Vizag you are in and who you are cooking for, and we will help you pick the jars.
Cash on Delivery is available on all serviceable pincodes. You pay a ₹99 advance online to confirm the order, and a ₹50 COD fee is added by the delivery partner. If you pay fully online by UPI or card, there is no COD fee. Our COD guide walks through it step by step, and the latest terms are always on our shipping policy page.
