In Godavari homes, mutton is never an everyday thing. It comes out for Sankranti, for a son-in-law's visit, for a Sunday when the whole family sits down together. That is why a jar of mamsam pachadi feels special. When you open it, it feels like a festival meal.

At Pickle Basket we make two mutton pickles, and the question we hear most is: which one should I order? Both are made with fresh mutton and Andhra spices in groundnut oil, but they taste quite different. Here is a simple, honest comparison to help you choose, with the current prices from our site. You can also see both jars side by side on our mutton pickle page.

The Short Answer

  • Choose Mutton Pickle if you want a rich, meaty, spicy pickle with the warm aroma of cloves, cardamom and cinnamon.
  • Choose Gongura Mutton Pickle if you love sour, tangy food and miss the famous gongura mamsam from home.

Can't decide? Order a 250 g jar of each and let the family vote.

Mutton Pickle (Mamsam Pachadi): Deep, Rich and Festive

Our Mutton Pickle is the jar many families bring out when guests come home. The fresh mutton is cooked slowly so the pieces stay tender. Then it is fried until dry, mixed with red chilli powder, ginger-garlic, coriander powder and seeds, fenugreek, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, cumin and lemon juice, and covered with groundnut oil.

Ingredients (from the product page): fresh mutton, red chilli powder, garlic, ginger, curry leaves, mustard seeds, salt, coriander powder, turmeric powder, groundnut oil, coriander seeds, fenugreek seeds, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, cumin and lemon juice.
How it tastes:
  • The meaty flavour of the mutton is at the centre
  • Whole spices (cloves, cardamom and cinnamon) give a warm, festive aroma
  • Red chilli and ginger-garlic bring real Andhra heat
  • A little lemon juice keeps it bright, not heavy

Current prices: 250 g ₹599 | 500 g ₹1,099 | 1 kg ₹2,099

Gongura Mutton Pickle: Sour, Spicy and Very Andhra

Gongura mamsam is one of the best-loved dishes in Andhra and Telangana homes, and this pickle carries that taste in a jar. The mutton is cooked slowly and fried until dry. Fresh gongura leaves (red sorrel) are cooked down separately and blended with chilli powder, garlic, ginger, coriander seeds, fenugreek, cumin and lemon juice. Then everything is combined with the mutton under groundnut oil.

Ingredients (from the product page): fresh mutton, fresh gongura leaves (sorrel leaves), red chilli powder, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, garlic, ginger, salt, turmeric powder, coriander seeds, groundnut oil, curry leaves, cumin and lemon juice.
How it tastes:
  • Sourness from the gongura is the first thing you notice
  • Chilli heat follows right behind
  • The sharp gongura cuts through the richness of the mutton, so it never feels too heavy
  • It feels bolder and more distinctly Andhra than the plain mutton pickle

Current prices: 250 g ₹699 | 500 g ₹1,199 | 1 kg ₹2,199

If you are new to gongura itself, our guide to gongura pickle explains what this leaf is and why Telugu people love it so much.

Side by Side

  • Main flavour: Mutton Pickle is rich, meaty and spicy. Gongura Mutton is sour, spicy and rich.

How to Enjoy Mutton Pickle at Home

Mutton pickle is strong, so a piece or two is usually enough for one meal. Here is how Andhra families like to eat it.

With Mutton Pickle

  • Hot rice with ghee. This is the best way to taste the masala. Mix a little of the oil into the rice too.
  • Pulka or chapati. Tear a piece of roti and pick up one mutton piece with some masala.
  • Curd rice on the side. The coolness of curd balances the richness.
  • Next to biryani or pulao, as a spicy side.

With Gongura Mutton

  • Hot rice and ghee, mixed well. This is the traditional way.
  • Jonna rotte (jowar roti) or chapati.
  • A small spoon with pappu (dal) and rice. The sour gongura and the mild dal go together beautifully.

Which Pack Size Should You Buy?

Here is what the jars cost per pack, using our current prices:

  • 250 g: a good first order. Mutton Pickle ₹599, Gongura Mutton ₹699.
  • 500 g: for families who already know they love it. Mutton Pickle ₹1,099, Gongura Mutton ₹1,199.
  • 1 kg: the best value for big families or for sharing. Mutton Pickle ₹2,099, Gongura Mutton ₹2,199.

A simple way to see the value: four 250 g jars of Mutton Pickle would cost ₹2,396, while one 1 kg pack is ₹2,099, so the bigger pack saves ₹297. If your household eats mutton pickle often, the 1 kg is the smarter buy. If you are trying it for the first time, start with 250 g.

Who Should Choose Which?

  • First time trying a mutton pickle: Start with Mutton Pickle. The rich, spicy taste is easy to love.
  • Telugu family missing home food: Gongura Mutton. That gongura mamsam taste is hard to find outside Andhra and Telangana.
  • Mixed family: One jar of each. The spice lovers take one, the sour-food lovers take the other.
  • Not sure about mutton at all? Our Chicken Pickle is lighter and a good first non-veg pickle. Our guide to Andhra non-veg pickles compares chicken, prawn and mutton.

Storing Mutton Pickle the Right Way

Meat pickles need a little extra care:

  • Refrigerate after opening. Our product pages recommend this for the best freshness.
  • Always use a clean, completely dry spoon.
  • Keep the pieces under the oil layer.
  • Close the lid tightly and keep the jar away from sunlight.
  • Never put pickle back in the jar after it has touched a plate or rice.
  • Follow the shelf-life details on the label of the jar you receive.

Are the mutton pieces soft?

Yes. We cook the mutton slowly before frying, so the pieces stay tender in the masala.

What is the price of 1 kg mutton pickle?

Right now, 1 kg of Mutton Pickle is ₹2,099 and 1 kg of Gongura Mutton Pickle is ₹2,199. Prices can change, so please check the product page before you order.
