Andhra Pickles Without Garlic: Which Jars to Choose When You Avoid Garlic

Garlic is everywhere in Andhra cooking. It's in our avakaya, our tomato pickle, our chicken pickle, our gongura. For most people, that's part of the joy. But many families and individuals avoid garlic: during certain vratams and fasting days, during months like Karthika or Shravana in some homes, for religious or community traditions, or simply because they don't enjoy it.

We get messages from customers asking, "Do you have any pickles without garlic?" The answer is yes. Here's a clear guide.

Important: How to Read This Guide

This list is based on the ingredient lists on our product pages at the time of writing. Please:

  • Always check the product page before ordering, since it is the most up-to-date source.
  • Contact us on WhatsApp at +91 98486 58989 if you have a strict dietary requirement, so we can answer your questions directly.
  • Note that all our pickles are made in the same kitchen, so if you need a guarantee of zero contact with garlic for medical or strict religious reasons, please talk to us first.

None of our pickles list onion as an ingredient.

Our Pickles That Do Not List Garlic

1. Magaya Pickle

Magaya Pickle is peeled raw mango pieces pickled with red chilli, mustard, fenugreek, a little jaggery and tamarind in groundnut oil.
Ingredients listed: raw green mangoes, red chilli powder, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, salt, turmeric, asafoetida, groundnut oil, jaggery and tamarind.
How it tastes: Tangy, spicy and slightly sweet, with soft mango pieces. It's a lovely mango pickle for those who miss avakaya but avoid garlic.
Best with: Curd rice, hot rice with ghee, chapati, upma.

2. Usiri Pickle

Usiri Pickle is whole fresh amla pickled the Andhra way with red chilli, mustard, fenugreek, curry leaves and cumin in groundnut oil.
Ingredients listed: fresh amla, red chilli powder, turmeric, mustard seeds, salt, fenugreek seeds, dried chilli, curry leaves, groundnut oil and cumin.
How it tastes: Tangy, slightly bitter and spicy, with bite-sized amla pieces. Amla is also considered auspicious in Karthika Masam, so many families enjoy usiri pickle during that month.
Best with: Curd rice, dal rice, hot rice with ghee.

We've written a full post on usiri pickle if you'd like to know more.

3. Munakkaya Pachadi

Munakkaya Pachadi is tender drumstick pieces pickled with red chilli powder, mustard seeds, turmeric and salt.
Ingredients listed: red chilli powder, salt, turmeric powder, mustard seeds (avalu) and drumsticks.
How it tastes: Earthy, spicy and savoury. Chew the piece for the soft inside and masala, and leave the fibrous skin.
Best with: Curd rice, pappu annam, rasam rice.

Pickles That Do Contain Garlic

For clarity, the rest of our range lists garlic in its ingredients, including Avakaya, Koru Pachadi, Tomato, Lemon, Ginger, Gongura, Kothimeeri, Pandu Mirchi, and all our chicken, mutton and prawn pickles. If you avoid garlic, these are not the right choice.

A No-Garlic Pickle Basket

If your household avoids garlic, a simple basket of the three works beautifully together:

  • Magaya for mango pickle cravings and curd rice
  • Usiri for a tangy, slightly bitter pickle with rice and dal
  • Munakkaya Pachadi for an earthy, village-style taste

Each comes in 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg packs. For a first order, three 250 g jars let you try all three. Check each product page for current prices.

Meal Ideas Without Garlic

For vratam or fasting days (where pickles are allowed)

Customs vary a lot between families and fasts. If your fast allows rice, curd and pickles, curd rice with a little magaya or usiri is a gentle, satisfying meal. Please follow your own family's rules.

For everyday meals

  • Pappu annam with usiri pickle: Plain dal rice with tangy amla.
  • Magaya annam: Hot rice, ghee and magaya, mashed together.
  • Curd rice with munakkaya: The village classic.
  • Chapati with magaya: Tear soft magaya pieces into a rolled chapati.

For guests who avoid garlic

When you host guests who avoid garlic, keep a separate jar of magaya or usiri with its own spoon, so they can enjoy pickle with confidence.

Storage Tips

The usual rules apply:

  • Dry spoon, always. If you also keep garlic pickles, use separate spoons.
  • Keep pieces under the oil.
  • Lid tight; cool, dry place.
  • Refrigerate after opening for the best freshness, as our product pages advise.
  • Follow the shelf-life details on the jar label.
