Ginger Pickle Online: Allam Pachadi, the Sweet, Sour and Spicy Andhra Pickle Made for Pesarattu

In Andhra, some food pairings are almost sacred. Pappu and avakaya. Curd rice and lemon pickle. And pesarattu with allam pachadi.

Walk into any tiffin centre in Vijayawada, Rajahmundry or Guntur in the morning and you will see crisp green pesarattu, often with upma folded inside (the famous MLA pesarattu), served with a small mound of sweet-sour-spicy ginger chutney or pickle on the side. That ginger partner is what gives pesarattu its personality.

This post is all about allam pachadi: what it is, why it works so well, and how to enjoy it even if pesarattu isn't on your breakfast table.

What Is Allam Pachadi?

Allam means ginger in Telugu. Allam pachadi is a thick ginger pickle or chutney that balances three tastes:
  • Sweet from jaggery
  • Sour from tamarind
  • Spicy from red chilli, with the warm bite of fresh ginger

Our Ginger Pickle is made with fresh ginger ground with tamarind, jaggery, red chilli and garlic into a thick pachadi in groundnut oil. The full ingredient list on the product page includes fresh ginger, red chilli powder, jaggery, curry leaves, mustard seeds, salt, turmeric, fenugreek, garlic, cumin, dried chilli, tamarind and groundnut oil.

Fresh Ginger Chutney vs Allam Pachadi Pickle

In Andhra homes, you will find two versions:

  • Fresh allam chutney is ground the same morning, often with roasted urad dal or chana dal, and eaten within a day or two. It is lighter and more like a dip.
  • Allam pachadi pickle is cooked down with more tamarind, jaggery and oil so that it keeps much longer. It is thicker, richer and more concentrated.

The pickle version is what most people living away from home rely on. You cannot grind fresh ginger chutney every morning before office, but you can open a jar.

Why Ginger Works So Well With Pesarattu

Pesarattu is made from whole green moong dal. It is earthy, slightly grassy and quite plain on its own. Allam pachadi brings everything the dosa lacks:

  • The sweetness of jaggery rounds off the earthy dal.
  • The tamarind adds brightness.
  • The ginger gives a warm, clean bite.
  • The chilli wakes up the whole plate.

Many Telugu families also feel that ginger and moong dal are a comfortable, light combination for the morning, which is why the pairing has stayed for generations.

Breakfast Ideas With Allam Pachadi

1. Pesarattu, the classic

Make pesarattu as usual, sprinkle chopped onion and green chilli on top, and serve with a spoon of allam pachadi. If you have time, fold some rava upma inside for MLA pesarattu.

2. Upma

Plain rava upma becomes so much more interesting with ginger pickle on the side. This is the second most loved allam pairing.

3. Idli and dosa

Mix a little allam pachadi with a spoon of ghee or sesame oil and use it as a dip for idli. Or spread a thin layer on a dosa before folding.

4. Pongal

The sweet-sour ginger cuts through rich ven pongal.

5. Poha and vermicelli upma

North Indian and Maharashtrian breakfasts work too. A small spoon beside poha is surprisingly good.

6. Hot rice and ghee

Allam pachadi isn't only for breakfast. A little mixed with hot rice and ghee is lovely at lunch, especially on days when you want something less fiery than avakaya.

Who Will Love Ginger Pickle?

  • People who enjoy sweet-sour-spicy flavours, like Gujarati or Tamil puli-inji lovers
  • People who find avakaya or pandu mirchi too hot but still want an Andhra pickle
  • Families who eat South Indian breakfasts daily
  • Anyone who simply loves the taste of ginger

If ginger is not your thing, try our Tomato Pickle, which also pairs well with idli and dosa.

Building a Breakfast Pickle Shelf

If your home has tiffin every morning, three jars cover almost everything:

We wrote about ginger, lemon, coriander and drumstick pickles together in Beyond Avakaya: everyday Andhra veg pickles.

How to Store Allam Pachadi

  • Always use a clean, dry spoon.
  • Keep the surface covered with oil.
  • Close the lid tightly and keep the jar in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
  • Refrigerate after opening for the best freshness, as our product pages advise.
  • Follow the shelf-life details on your jar label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ginger pickle sweet or spicy?

Both. Jaggery and tamarind give it a sweet-sour base, and Andhra red chilli adds the heat.

What is allam pachadi best with?

Traditionally pesarattu and upma, but it goes well with any South Indian breakfast or hot rice.

Is allam pachadi the same as puli inji?

They are cousins. Both are sweet-sour ginger preparations with tamarind and jaggery. Allam pachadi has the Andhra touch of mustard, fenugreek, garlic and red chilli.

What sizes does your ginger pickle come in?

250 g, 500 g and 1 kg. Check the product page for current prices.
